Being the mom of boys, I am on a perpetual hunt for outdoor activities that sap their seemingly endless energy while requiring little from me. So skateparks are definitely a favorite haunt of mine, for aside from worrying about them breaking a bone or getting a concussion, I can usually sit back and watch while they run their darling selves ragged.
I had heard about Cavalero Hill Park, a 35-acre piece of land that encompasses the Lake Stevens Rotary Skate Park a few years ago, but when we showed up on an overcast gray afternoon recently the park still looked almost brand new. Taking nearly 10 years to come to fruition, when it finally opened, the skatepark featured a variety of ramps, rails, ledges and a 12 foot drop-in bowl.
Simply put, this skatepark is huge and the day we were there, there were probably close to 30 kids using scooters, bikes, or boards and I didn’t witness one run in due to lack of space. There are multiple areas where my little guy could feel like a biking badass without me worrying about him crashing into a bigger kid or knocking out his own front teeth by riding over an edge he couldn’t handle.
Once they were done ripping it up, we headed over to the playground which sits adjacent to the skatepark and though small, it still packs a punch with brightly colored & unique playground equipment on display. There are some cool geometric shapes to climb on and a variety of swings to choose from as well, including one that spins like a Merry-Go-Round.
By the time we finally left, it was safe to say that exhaustion had been reached and as we pulled out of the parking lot, heads began to bob and already I was envisioning a relaxing afternoon with my book while my wild ones dreamed of bikes, jumps and those sweet everlasting afternoons of childhood.
