The Sand Bar

On a recent trip to Cabo San Lucas, my first visit to this little slice of the world, I did what I always do when visiting a new place, took a deep dive on ‘ol Tik Tok. Somewhere along my scrolling journey, I came across The Sand Bar and it sounded like just the kind of Mexican adventure I needed in my life. An open air massage on the beach of Los Cabos? Sign me up! But first, I needed to convince my fellow travelers, none of whom I had travelled with before, to not only venture to downtown Los Cabos but to then get a massage in the nude. Oh ya, that’s the one stipulation about the Sand Bar; no clothes required. I suppose from a message therapist standpoint that makes sense, no fabric to get in the way or maneuver around, just strong hands and a generous towel.

So at this point you might ask, how did I end up in Los Cabos with three other ladies who I was about to convince to go on a random adventure with me that I had found on TikTok? Well it starts with a restaurant and a little sales competition and ends with a great boss and lots of margaritas.

When I’m not writing or raising boys, I’m slinging sandwiches at a great little place called Heidi’s Sandwichboard. And being the ever ambitious person that she is, Heidi came up with a sales incentive which, if we met it, meant that we, the front of the house staff, would be lounging on a beach together in Mexico at the end of our goal. Needless to say, we met our goal and she won best boss ever in my book.

So there I was, selling up the Sand Bar, and trying to convince everyone to go “off property” as we were staying at a beautiful resort just outside of town but somehow I got then onboard and so, off we went!

Once we arrived, we were shuttled into changing rooms and then emerged out onto an open air deck, full of message tables and a cool sea breeze. Climbing up onto the table, I was greeted by my masseuse, a colossus of a woman named Maria who towered over me. As we settled in, the sound of the waves lapping the beach and the occasional screech of a seagull were the only sounds I heard aside from the soft shuffling of feet on the wooden deck. Maria got right to work, massaging knots and bumps out I didn’t even know I had.

The atmosphere was so relaxing that I almost fell asleep many times and I’m pretty sure I may have actually started drooling at one point. We had sprung for the hour and a half massage which was just right and once it was over I clamored up from the table in a fog as if coming back from some dream or far off reality.

I looked around and was surprised that the deck had literally filled up while I was laying face down, nearly every table was in use and I was glad that we had booked an early time.

As we all emerged from the changing rooms, with our hair askew and our skin smelling like lotion, I felt glad that my choice of adventure had panned out. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed it and my friend Katie even said that she would have returned later that day for round two if we had had the time.

And as we sauntered down the beach, in search of our next adventure, with the warm Cabo sun glinting off our skin, I was thankful for a world with beach massages, and co-workers who become friends, for adventures in new places and trying something unfamiliar. And most of all, I was grateful for a world in which touch transcends language, where a healing hand can help no matter if the person wielding it speaks your language or not. For after all, that’s what a massage is all about; another person, often a stranger, who helps you reach all those parts of yourself that you cannot so that you may walk away feeling refreshed and revitalized by the simple act of human touch.
